Deirdre is a peculiar animal (more specifically, an emu-raffe) who resided in Miss Wren's Menagerie until her death when she was shot by wights.
Biography[]
Hollow City[]
Deirdre is one of the residents at Miss Wren's Menagerie. When Addison MacHenry calls for the animals to come out and meet Jacob Portman and his friends, Deirdre is the first to be introduced.
After Olive asks where the other kinds of peculiar animals in Cuthbert's story are, Deirdre with the rest of the loop's residents become downcast. She asks that Addison don't show the children the cemetery during their meal, but he insists, and Deirdre and Grunt come along.
The animals' mood is lifted again when Bronwyn reveals that "Miss Peregrine" also remains uncaptured by the wights (though in reality Caul is impersonating her), and Deirdre's reaction is a gasp.
She and the animals help the children prepare for their journey to London. She fails to remember the exact peculiar property of the sweaters spun from peculiar sheep wool given to the children, but says that in any case, they are warm. In response to Olive asking if the animals could come with them, Deirdre states that the animals, especially herself, wouldn't be able to last five minutes as an animal like her cannot pass for normal.
Death[]
She is killed by wights during their raid on the menagerie shortly after most of the peculiar children leave for London, shot for resisting and trying to stop the wights. She is the only known casualty of the raid.

Deirdre is half giraffe and half donkey, despite her species name being an emu-raffe, and has only two legs. Her tongue is fat, pink, and three feet long.
Personality[]
She can be a sore loser when it comes to cards but she is otherwise playful and affectionate. When Addison is describing emu-raffes for Jacob and his friends, he says that emu-raffes have a peevish temper. She is also brave, as she died trying to defend the menagerie.
Peculiarity[]
She is an emu-raffe and seems to have a great focal point of gravity, having the ability to stand only on her hind legs. She is also intelligent, and is one of only two animals at the menagerie that can speak, the other being Addison.

Addison MacHenry[]
Deirdre and Addison are very good friends, Deirdre shown to be very affectionate towards him.
Miss Wren[]
Like Addison, Deirdre has great respect and love for Miss Wren, calling her a "very special" bird and asks Addison not to refer to her in past tense while she was away from the menagerie. Deirdre did seem slightly resentful about Miss Wren leaving to help the kidnapped ymbrynes, as she mutters that Miss Wren had, along with not thinking of her own safety, had not thought of the animals' safety in her absence either.
