The Experiment in the film adaptation

The Experiment of 1908, also known as the infamous event of 1908, was conducted in the summer of 1908 in a loop in Siberia.

History[]

The infamous experiment took place many years before the events of the Peculiar Children series. It was conducted by Caul and the Claywings with the aid of several ymbrynes in a bid to secure immortality for themselves, at a nameless old loop which was unused for centuries in the Siberian tundra. According to Miss Peregrine in the first book, her brothers Caul and Myron Bentham were taken with a method that granted a kind of immortality. They conducted the experiment, and even requested Miss Peregrine's assistance, which she did not give. They were both warned and threatened not to do it by the Council of Ymbrynes, but still went through with it.

In Library of Souls, Myron gives a different account. Learning that Jack "Caul" Bentham was a traitor to peculiardom and wanted the Library of Souls, or Abaton, to himself, Myron converted back to the 'good' side and sought a talk with his brother. Jack mocked Myron as a coward, and afterwards told the Claywings that he was a traitor, and thus Myron was banished from the group. After being being disgraced and scorned by his brother, Myron was placed in a prison where he secretly hatched a plan to trick and get rid of Jack and his Claywings forever. This plan set into motion the Experiment.

In his cell, Myron wrote out a process that supposedly reversed and eliminated the dangers of aging forward. In actuality, it was a largely forgotten procedure to collapse a loop, and the reversal of aging forward was a side effect of escaping the collapsing loop. A member of Caul's movement whose sympathy Myron had earned circulated the procedure as his own, and Caul believed it.

Aftermath[]

The loop collapsed, which was followed by a "catastrophic explosion that rattled windows as far as the Azores." The reaction was so strong, it lasted a day and a night, blowing up half of Siberia.

Afterwards, Caul and his followers, who had not escaped the loop, were transformed into hollowgasts, who began to terrorise peculiardom. Eventually, some evolved into wights.
